Mission Statement

The Mississippi Reading Clinic (MRC) will actively promote, model, and provide evidence-based literacy assessment and interventions that benefit the children and youth of Mississippi and the teachers that are called to serve them.

Who We Are

The Mississippi Reading Clinic (MRC) is a legacy project of The Barksdale Reading Institute (BRI), which ceased operations at the end of June 2023.

Just prior to the Institute’s closure, the BRI staff envisioned a plan to sustain the work and ethos that were hallmarks of BRI but to do so under a different banner, with new funding sources, and with an extended mission: to effect reading scores for older students.

The goal of the project is to produce dramatic growth in reading for upper elementary and middle grades students in pilot sites by providing research-based, direct intervention services, and introducing high-quality professional development to teachers for a sustainable model.

As a Mississippi non-profit, the MRC will provide diagnostic reading assessments, individualized reading intervention plans, and reading interventions to Mississippi students struggling to read; and training for 4th-8th grade interventionists and teachers of reading… all at no-cost/low-cost.
